Baranun is Buranun — the river the first brewers called home
Long before hops and cold storage, the Sumerians of ancient Mesopotamia gave the Euphrates its oldest recorded name: Buranun. We took that name for a simple reason — beer and rivers have always traveled together.
Buranun is named
Sumerian scribes on the river's banks call it Buranun — the name later rendered in Akkadian as Purattu, and in English as the Euphrates.
Beer is written down
On those same riverbanks, the Sumerians leave the oldest known brewing text — the Hymn to Ninkasi — turning grain and water into the world's first documented beer.
The name travels
Baranun carries that name to a different confluence: San Diego and Ensenada, two cities sharing one coastline and one craft-beer culture.
